Wallpaper FAQ

How do I know how much wallpaper to order?

Wallpaper quantity depends on the size of your walls and the wallpaper you’ve selected. Our free estimates always include a calculation of how much wallpaper is required to complete your project. Since every installation is different, here’s what we typically need to determine the correct amount. We’ll need the width and height of each individual wall you’d like wallpapered (square footage is not necessary). If your walls have angles or custom shapes, measurements can be taken at their tallest and widest points. We’re happy to visit your property to take measurements if needed, but estimates are completed more quickly when measurements are provided in advance. Clear, simple photos of the walls are also helpful.

In addition, please provide an online link to the specific wallpaper you’ve chosen. We’ll need the roll or bolt length, width, and pattern repeat, which are typically listed on the wallpaper manufacturer’s website.

Can’t I just use an online wallpaper calculator?

We’ve found that many online wallpaper calculators are unreliable because they don’t account for wallpaper pattern repeat. While these calculators may estimate enough material to cover the wall surface, they often fail to calculate the additional wallpaper needed for proper pattern alignment. As a result, online calculators commonly underestimate quantities, leaving projects one, two, or even three rolls short.

How is wallpaper measured?

Wallpaper is often measured in single rolls but sold in double rolls. For example, a single roll may be 4.5 yards long, while the double roll you purchase is a single continuous piece measuring 9 yards. This is the standard measurement system used by most North American wallpaper manufacturers.

Double-roll wallpaper must be ordered in even quantities. If your project requires seven single rolls, you’ll need to order eight, which would arrive as four double rolls. Because some wallpapers are sold simply as “rolls” without single or double distinctions, it’s important to carefully review product details. We recommend always calculating quantities using double roll measurements. If you have questions, we’re happy to help by phone or email.

Is wallpaper difficult to remove?

Wallpaper quality has improved dramatically over the past several decades. Modern wallpapers are often easier to remove than older papers, especially when installed correctly. A professional installation can also make future removal simpler. We use specialized tools and techniques to safely remove old wallpaper and adhesive, while protecting your walls and preparing them for a fresh new finish.

Is peel-and-stick wallpaper a good option for me?

There are many high-quality peel-and-stick wallpapers available, but there are also lower-quality “temporary” options that can be difficult to distinguish. Some of these papers may begin peeling within 24 hours. For lasting results, we generally recommend traditional wallpapers over temporary options whenever possible.
